PURPOSE

Childhood & Adolescent Obesity is become a growing epidemic. The purpose of this presentation is to educate any physician who has juvenile or adolescent patient.

EDUCATIONAL OUTLINE

  1. The new epidemic of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in children and adolescents.
  2. The epidemiologic overview of:
    a) the epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus by gender and race
    b) the changes in obesity prevalence by decade from 1963 to present
  3. The risk factors for diabetes and children and adolescents
  4. Current treatment options (or lack thereof) for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus.
  5. WHO (World Health Organization) Criteria for Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
  6. Studies to Treat or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (STOPP-T2D) clinical trial funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health.
    a) Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria for the Treatment Options for type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) trial
    b) Study Design of TODAY
    c) Primary Aim and Outcomes of TODAY
    d) Major Secondary Aims and Study Design of TODAY
    e) Compare the efficacy of the three different treatment arms of TODAY
    f) Primary Outcome Assessment Mechanism of TODAY
    g) Participant/volunteer benefits for participation in the TODAY clinical trial

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the program the participants will be able to:

  1. Define the new epidemic of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in children and adolescents.
  2. Report the overall lifetime risk of getting diabetes mellitus by gender and race.
  3. Report the epidemiologic overview and change in obesity by decade from 1963 to present.
  4. Identify the risk factors for diabetes and children.
  5. Describe the current treatment options or lack of treatment options for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus.
  6. Describe the STOPP-T2D Studies to Treat or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus clinical trial funded National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health.
  7. Explain the WHO (World Health Organization) Criteria for Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The participating physicians will practice better patient care through the understanding of how to diagnosis and treat type 2 diabetes.

This activity did not receive any commercial support for the development of this presentation.

The target audience includes a) family practitioners, b) internists, c) family medicine, and d) pediatricians.

IMPLEMENTATION

The estimated time for completion of this program is 1.25 hours. In order to get the greatest value from this program, we recommend a five-step process.

  3. Discuss the information covered with your staff or colleagues.
  4. Return to your test answer sheet for a final review and review your test answers.
  5. Complete and return the CME test answer sheet and course evaluation.

Kenneth C. Copeland is the CMRI Ruth & Paul Jonas Endowed Chair in Endocrinology/Diabetes and also Professor and Chief of the Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Section. He is the Vice Chairman for the OUHSC Department of Pediatrics and the Medical Director for the OUHSC Pediatric Practice Group.

HOW TO OBTAIN CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDITS

A certificate of completion will be awarded to physicians completing the program (with a score of 70% or higher).
